The options allow you to tailor Play It By Ear
to your personal needs. Each exercise has a
group of current options which affect its
performance. For example, you can use the
Range and Scale options to set the key for
the Melody and Single Note exercises. With the
Interval Identification exercise you can use the
Included Intervals option to determine which
intervals you want to practice naming.
(Click the down arrow for more.)
To change an option setting, follow these steps:
1. Pull down the Options menu and select the
desired option. Or, click the option name in
the current options window, if applicable.
NOTE: The current options window does not appear
on CGA monitors. For more information, see
Appendix B in the User's Manual.
The selected option's dialog box appears.
(Click the down arrow for more.)
2. Make your changes and click OK.
There are three types of dialog boxes.
The first type contains a list of options with
check boxes in front of each option. When you
click a check box, it changes color to indicate
its status. On a color monitor, yellow check
boxes are selected, red are not. On a monochrome
monitor, a white check box is selected, a black
one is not.
(Click the down arrow for more.)
The second type contains a number in its center,
and arrows pointing away from it on each side.
For example, the Melody Length, Exercise Length,
Pre-exercise Countdown, or MIDI Channel dialog
boxes. To decrease the number, click the left
arrow. To increase the number, click the right
arrow.
The final type asks you a Yes or No question.
Click the appropriate answer.
(Click the down arrow for more.)
If you try to change an option after you have
begun an exercise session, Ear warns you that
your current scores will be erased. Click OK to
end the session and change the option, or click
No to continue the exercise session. You can
check your current options settings at any time
by clicking the Current Options button. This is
useful if you don't want to stop the exercise
session, but just want to verify what the
options settings are.
(Click the down arrow for more.)
When you quit Ear, you have the opportunity of
saving your current option settings to disk. If
you have made any changes in the options since
you started Ear, Ear asks if you want to save
those changes when you quit. Click Yes to save
the changes, click No to abandon them.
Refer to Chapter 4, "Options" for information
concerning each option.
